On rationality and learning

چکیده

Much work in machine learning views learning primarily as a process of representation. We propose instead to view learning as the rational interpretation of experience. This provides a unifying, precise framework that illuminates both the strengths and weaknesses of current learning methods and the possibilities for uniformly mechanizing different types of learning. This research was supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DOD), ARPA Order No. 4976, Amendment 19, monitored by the Air Force Avionics Laboratory under Contract F33615-87-C-1499. The views and conclusions contained in this document are those of the author, and should not be interpreted as representing the official policies, either expressed or implied, of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or the Government of the United States of America.

Value Rational Consideration of E-learning

As an idea of learning and a mode of learning, e-learning dramatically highlights the subjectivity of the learners and make value rationality known. Meanwhile, value rationality appears damage and breaking in this process. Therefore, it is necessary to make learners fully exert subjective activity and intensify effective supervision on e-learning to construct e-learning and value rationality ha...

Learning and rationality in a complex environment

Rational choice under uncertainty is at the same time presupposition and consequence of learning. The feedback between rationality and learning has different features in environments characterized by different degrees of complexity. This may be clarified by delving into the foundations of decision theory under uncertainty that allows a deeper understanding of the strict correspondence between d...

Adaptive Agent Models Using Temporal Discounting, Memory Traces and Hebbian Learning with Inhibition, and their Rationality

In this paper three adaptive agent models incorporating triggered emotional responses are explored and evaluated on their rationality. One of the models is based on temporal discounting second on memory traces and the third one on hebbian learning with mutual inhibition. The models are assessed using a measure reflecting the environment’s behaviour and expressing the extent of rationality. Simu...

Bounded Rationality in the Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma

In diverse fields such as computer science, economics and psychology, bounded rationality has emerged as an important research topic. Models which assume the existence of perfectly rational agents seem inadequate for many realworld problems where agents often lack perfect rationality. Classes of imperfect rationality include the conditions of incomplete knowledge, memory, information or computa...

On Rationality of Decision Models Incorporating Emotion-Related Valuing and Hebbian Learning

In this paper an adaptive decision model based on predictive loops through feeling states is analysed from the perspective of rationality. Four different variations of Hebbian learning are considered for different types of connections in the decision model. To assess the extent of rationality, a measure is introduced reflecting the environment’s behaviour. Simulation results and the extents of ...
